School in the Middle East – H1N1 Update (9/29/09):
There is one case of an international student with the flu at Alexandria University in Egypt. This is not a student on the Middlebury program, but he does reside in the same dormitory where the men on our program reside. So far, this is not a confirmed case of H1N1, but the university is treating it as such as a precautionary measure, and the student has been moved to a hospital room. The university administration has told the male students that they are not to leave the dorm complex for three days, though they are allowed to be outside of the dorm within the complex. (They are also allowed to go to the cafeteria within the dorm complex.)
Classes for our program and most other international students at Alexandria University have been postponed until Sunday, October 4th. Our staff has been, and will continue to visit students in the men's dorm. The staff is currently working on establishing arrangements to continue classes should the center for Teaching Arabic as a Foreign Language at Alexandria University be closed for an extended period of time.
