Brazil, with its physical beauty and welcoming social environment, is the largest country in Latin America.  Its diverse and vibrant culture offers an ideal setting for students of Portuguese to improve their language skills and immerse themselves in one of the world's most captivating societies.  The School in Latin America features study options in Belo Horizonte , Florianópolis, and Niterói.

Belo Horizonte, also known as the Garden City, is the capital of Minas Gerais, a prosperous mining region in the mountains about 250 miles north of Rio de Janeiro.  Home to 2.5 million people, the city has a pronounced sense of community and family that students find inviting.  Students enroll at the private Pontifícia Universidade Católica de Minas Gerais. Access available courses by selecting an area of study from this list.

Florianópolis, the capital of Brazil’s southern state of Santa Catarina, is home to an excellent and comprehensive federal university, the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC). Florianópolis, a city of 300,000, is located on an island, and features breathtaking scenery as well as a vibrant cultural life around the university. Students are able to take courses in most liberal arts disciplines at UFSC, including sociology, history, political science, literature, philosophy, and geography. Access available courses by selecting from among the “Cursos de Graduação” menu on the left side. This link will take you to different departments (or groupings of departments) where you can find courses that are offered at UFSC.

In the city of Niterói, a community of 500,000 people located just across the bay from Rio de Janeiro, students enroll at the Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF). The ease of travel across to Rio coupled with the calmer pace of Niteroi make this city a great choice for students wishing to immerse themselves in local Brazilian culture while simultaneously enjoying proximity to one of the world's most passionate and festive cities. Courses alongside local students are available in architecture, biology, social sciences, law, physics, geography, history, language and literature, math, psychology, environmental science, and chemistry. To access available courses, select graduação, then cursos oferecidos; select a subject, then licenciatura

Academic Program

Although students do not register for courses until they arrive in Latin America, there is limited course information available on each university's website. Students should use these listings as guides to the types of courses that will be available to them and as a basis for discussion with their academic advisors. In addition to two to four university courses and an internship, students are required to take the writing course during their first term of study in Latin America.
