Students of Middlebury College:
You must complete a different application than the one available on line.  Please visit the Office of International Programs and Off-Campus Study, Sunderland 127 to speak with an adviser and obtain the application.


Application Deadlines

Applications are accepted on a rolling-admissions basis with final deadlines as follows:

Fall and Year Latin America Fall and Year Spring
Students from other colleges March 15 March 1 October 1
Middlebury students February 1 February 1 February 1

Late applications will be considered on a space-available basis and provided that visa/university deadlines (where applicable) can be met.  Please refer to individual schools' sites for financial aid, calendar and fee information.

The following programs follow local university calendars, meaning students will be taking exams through much of January (unless otherwise indicated):

Students looking to study at one of these sites for only the fall semester should check to make sure that the program finishes before spring semester begins on their home campuses.  Full-year study is encouraged.

Students studying at our other sites for the fall semester will finish by the third week in December.


Admissions Requirements

Qualified undergraduates enrolled at other colleges and universities may apply to any of the Schools Abroad. Students must have achieved an average of B or better in their major and language courses, and an overall average of B- or better. In Germany, students must be of junior standing.

All students are expected to enroll in a language course the semester prior to going abroad. If students do not have adequate language preparation, they may be required to attend the appropriate summer Language School at Middlebury College prior to enrollment in a School Abroad.

In addition, applicants should meet the following language requirements:

China: Completion of a minimum of four semesters of college-level Chinese, equivalent to Middlebury's CHNS 0202. Five semesters or 2 years plus summer Chinese Language School are strongly preferred. Students considered to need further preparation before enrolling in the School in China may be required to enroll in the 9-week Chinese School summer session on the Middlebury campus. All students are expected to enroll in a Chinese course the semester preceding the term or year abroad.

France, Italy: Completion of a minimum of five semester of college-level language study or the equivalent, including one content course comparable to Middlebury College's appropriate pre-requisite course.

Germany: Junior-standing and completion of a minimum of six semesters of college-level German or the equivalent, including two content courses comparable to Middlebury College's 0300-level.  Applicants to Mainz who have taken four or five courses of college-level German or the equivalent will be given an oral assessment and written exam. [This option is not available in Berlin or for Middlebury undergraduates.]

Latin America: This program is recommended for advanced students of Spanish or Portuguese who are both independent learners and highly motivated.

  • Portuguese: Completion of 2nd year Portuguese
  • Spanish: Completion of a minimum of five semesters of college-level Spanish (including at least one content course) and no less than a B in their major.

    Middle East: Completion of a minimum of four semesters of college-level Arabic reaching a level equivalent to Middlebury College's ARBC 0202.
  • Russia: Completion of a minimum of four semesters of college-level Russian reaching a level equivalent to Middlebury College's RUSS 0202.

    Spain: Completion of a minimum of five semester of college-level language study or the equivalent, including one content course comparable to Middlebury College's appropriate pre-requisite course. Students considered to need further preparation before enrolling in the School in Spain may be required to enroll in the 7-week Spanish School summer session on the Middlebury campus. All students are expected to enroll in a Spanish course the semester preceding the term or year abroad.


    Enrollment

    Upon acceptance, all students must pay a nonrefundable $400 enrollment deposit to be applied to tuition charges. This deposit guarantees a place in the Schools Abroad.


    Instructions

    1.To download the C.V. Starr-Middlebury Schools Abroad application forms you will need Adobe's Acrobat Reader which may be downloaded free of charge from the Adobe Web site.

    2. Once you have downloaded and saved the application form you will need to print the form. Select File/Print and "Shrink to Fit" to ensure that your printer will include the entire document.
