Alexandra University: local teachers are hired to teach classes specifically designed for program participants in advanced language, culture, and civilization.
- All course work is conducted entirely in Arabic;
- Students adhere to the Middlebury College Language Pledge;
- Curriculum designed for high intermediate and advanced Arabic language students;
- Housing with Egyptian student roommates in a renovated dormitory, in homestays, or in apartments;
- On-site staff in Alexandria;
- Four units of credit for the fall; five units of credit for the winter and spring terms; nine units for the academic year;
- Program enrolls approximately 20-30 students/semester
Courses:
Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) - 4 hours/week
Egyptian Colloquial Arabic - 4 hours/week
Arabic Translation - 2 hours/week
Media Arabic - 2 hours/week
* One-on-One/Content-Oriented Tutorial - 3 hours/week
* Enrolled students will receive a list of one-on-one topics several months prior to departure. Offerings include tutorials focusing on Politics, History, Religion, Literature, Geography, Sociology/Anthropology, or Economics.
Advanced students (in their fourth year of Arabic) will be able to replace a class with another content course taught in Arabic, such as History of the Middle East or Political Geography of the Middle East. In the Fall 2009 semester, the content courses offered are: Islamic Politics and Society; Modern Arabic Literature; and Modern Egyptian History.
Highly advanced students may be able to direct-enroll in a class at Alexandria University during their second semester at the School in the Middle East, with the consent of the Director.
