The C.V.Starr-Middlebury College School in Spain
was founded in 1951 as a Graduate Program where Middlebury College Spanish School students could continue and finish their MA degree. As Middlebury College undergraduate students began to show interest in going abroad, the program was expanded to fulfill their needs. Today the School in Spain offers academic experiences at institutions in four different locations: Córdoba, Getafe (Madrid), Logroño, and Madrid.

Córdoba
Middlebury students attend the Universidad de Córdoba and benefit from the unique cultural experience of southern Spain, with its multicultural legacy and history that stems from centuries of Muslim, Christian and Jewish coexistance.

Getafe (Madrid)
Students studying at the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid are able to experience campus life in the city of Getafe, that is less than 30 minutes away from downtown Madrid by train.

Logroño
The Middlebury program at the Universidad de La Rioja, located in the wine-making province of La Rioja, offers students the opportunity to live and study in Logroño, a vibrant provincial city of 110,000.

Madrid
The Sede Prim in Madrid houses the graduate program as well as an undergraduate study option.  This facility, run by Middlebury College, offers an academic program designed specifically for its students. The city of Madrid provides students a wealth of intellectual and cultural possibilities and enjoys a central location, making travel to various regions of the country convenient.

Middlebury Language Pledge

To take full advantage of their stay abroad, students are expected to maintain the spirit of the Middlebury College Language Pledge and to speak only Spanish while in Spain. We expect that no English will be used, except for emergency consultations with the Director.

Language assessment

All students will undergo an oral interview in Spanish (Oral Proficiency Interview) at the beginning and end of their study period in Spain.  The initial interview indicates the level at which the student can function in Spanish upon arrival, and the exit interview indicates the progress the student has made during the semester or academic year.

Language Requirement

Completion of a minimum of five semesters of college-level language study or the equivalent, including one content course comparable to Middlebury College's appropriate pre-requisite course.
