Descriptions of Past Internships in Córdoba
DOROTHY MITCHELL
Córdoba Acoge – Spring 2008
My internship was at Córdoba Acoge, an organization that helps immigrants in Córdoba find jobs, get legal advice, and an overview of some of the challenges they will face. My supervisor was the woman in charge of public education and coordinating the workshops and classes the organization offers to immigrants. I had two main roles - one was teaching english twice a week to interested immigrants. I enjoyed that because I got to meet some really great people (mostly from Latin America), although it could be frustrating because most of the students didn't attend consistently from one week to another. I got experience in making lesson plans and in teaching. Although I don't think I want to be a teacher in the future, it was still a good opportunity. My other project, which I came up with, was to create a map of Córdoba with symbols representing available resources for immigrants, with a corresponding list describing each resource. That was very time consuming, but I think it came out well and will be very useful, because immigrants show up all the time looking for things that Córdoba Acoge doesn't necessarily provide. That was a good exercise in graphic design for me, as well. Although in the future I hope to work in the art world, I think that my experience improved my spanish, which could be important in just about any career.
