Program Information and Course Offerings

All courses at the Sede Prim in Madrid are organized by Middlebury College for its School in Spain students. Courses are taught by a distinguished group of scholars, including university professors and other experts in the fields of letters, history, the social sciences, and the arts. The course offerings are organized with an emphasis on Spain in order to take full advantage of the students' presence there, and all courses are taught in Spanish.

Courses for the fall semester begin in early September and end with final examinations in mid-December. After the holiday vacation, the spring semester opens in early January and continues until late May.

These detailed descriptions are intended to assist students in preparing to attend the undergraduate program of studies in Madrid with Middlebury College in Spain. Please use THIS LIST to register for your classes.

In special cases and with permission from the Director, an advanced undergraduate may be allowed to take a graduate course which is normally not open to juniors.

2319A Spanish Language - Carballo. This course reviews grammatical structures and vocabulary and introduces the principles of composition to help students achieve a better command of oral and written Spanish. INCLUDES DISCUSSION SECTION: SEMINARIO DE ACTUALIDAD ESPAÑOLA.

2319B Spanish Language - Méndez. This course reviews grammatical structures and vocabulary and introduces the principles of composition to help students achieve a better command of oral and written Spanish. INCLUDES DISCUSSION SECTION: SEMINARIO DE ACTUALIDAD ESPAÑOLA.

2407 Advanced Syntax - Del Valle. The objective of this course is to develop and perfect the oral and written competence of the advanced student. Special consideration is given to the special challenges of the Spanish language for the English-speaking student. INCLUDES DISCUSSION SECTION: SEMINARIO DE ACTUALIDAD ESPAÑOLA.

LITERATURE 
2467 Theater in Madrid - Amestoy. This course studies the city of Madrid as reflected on the plays written about it. Attendance at several plays is required.

2301 España y América en el cuento - E. Béjar  This course studies the short story in the Spanish speaking world.

CULTURE AND CIVILIZATION
2001 Transatlantic histories - de la Guardia. This class approaches the close political, economic and cultural relationships between Spain and the Americas through the life stories of many of the protagonists involved.

2330 Spanish Anthropology - Bueno. An anthropological study of the people of Spain, particularly its varied cultural and social aspects.

2340 Art in the Museums of Madrid - Gallego. This course deals with Spanish painting from the 15th through the 20th centuries in the Museums of El Prado and Casón del Buen Retiro. Extensive visits to museums required with the class and independently.

2345 Fragile democracies: Political development  in Latin America and Spain - Seijó.  A course that looks at the political developments that have occurred in the governments of Latin America and Spain during the last half of the XXth century and until today.

2348 The European Union - Rodríguez. In this course, students will review the European Economic Community from the period after World War II and the Cold War. An important part of class time will study Spain's relationship with Europe before and after Franco and its integration into the European Community.

2499A/B Independent Study - Students interested in Music or Rural Spanish Architecture  may take an Independent Study in one of those subjects. Consult with the director in Madrid.

LITERATURE
2485 Anti-Heroes in Spanish Literature - Layna. An analysis of the "anti-hero" in 16th and 17th century Spanish novel. Literature will be considered as a reflection of social conflict and unrest born of poverty, discrimination and exclusion.

2302 Cultura y literatura en Latinoamerica - E. Béjar  This course studyes the culture and the literature of Latin America and how they reflect on each other.

CULTURE
2334 Environmental Policy in Spain - Seijó. This course looks at the current issues and developments in environmental policy in Spain, from a local as well as federal viewpoint.

2341 Art of the Museums II: 19th and 20th Centuries-  Doménech. This course deals with Spanish painting from the 19th and 20th centuries. Extensive visits to museums required with the class and independently.

2343 Madrid, the city of Velázquez and Goya - Gallego. A view at the city of Madrid, its society and culture through the paintings of Velázquez and Goya.

Students with special curricular needs may be able to enroll in selected courses offered by other U.S. universities in Madrid. Permission from the Director of the Middlebury program is required.
