The Middlebury Fire Department is a paid, on-call fire department with a membership of 44, operating out of two stations and answering approximately 180 calls per year.

Our volunteers have the opportunity to become nationally recognized firefighters (Level I) after completion of a required 140-hour classroom training course offered here in Middlebury during the academic year.  Non-classroom, hands-on training is held at the Vermont Fire Academy in Pittsford, VT and various other locations proximate to Middlebury. Training includes fire suppression tactics, hazardous materials awareness, wild land firefighting, and basic search-and-rescue techniques

Opportunities for non-fire ground activities such as data-entry, web development and maitenance, and digital photography are also avaliable. These technology-focused positions make up a general support staff for the firefighters and require basic knowledge of computers.
