Butch’s Team: Butch Varno is an adult who was born with Cerebral Palsy and is confined to a wheelchair. He has been working with Middlebury College students since the 1960s on physical therapy, tutoring, and accompanying him to sporting events. He is “Head Manager” of the men’s basketball team. College for Every Student (CFES): CFES is a group of college students who mentor at-risk students in elementary, middle, and high school. CFES mentors go once or twice a week to schools in both Vermont and New York areas to participate in one-on-one activities with students for an hour each session. CFES mentors also create events to bring students to the Middlebury campus to enhance their awareness of the possibility of a college education. Community Friends: This Middlebury mentoring program seeks to provide children in the area with positive role models and friends. Volunteers mentor one child (ages 6 to 12) living in Addison County. Dialogues for Peace: Dialogues for Peace (DFP) is a neutral organization committed to discussions and concrete action on various global conflict-related issues. Page 1 Literacy Project: Page 1 volunteers work as reading buddies, run after-school programs in elementary schools, and organize events to promote a love of reading throughout Addison County. The foremost goal is to get all students excited about reading and to help them take the initiative to read on their own. Both long-term and one-time volunteers are available. Relay for Life: Relay for Life is a national organization affiliated with the American Cancer Society that helps raise money to fight cancer. During Relay’s first year at Middlebury, over 65 teams participated, walking 18 hours and raising over $80,000. It is a campus and community-wide event and includes the walk, entertainment, and ceremonies dedicated to those with cancer. STAND Up!: The purpose of this group is to educate, advocate, and fundraise on issues that relate to genocide or other mass atrocities. STAND Up! will serve the community to forward education on the history and present cases of genocide, to advocate for the end to the crisis in Darfur, to fundraise for the education of refugees, both in returning to their home lands, through the organization NESEI: New Sudan Education Initiative, and in prospering in locations they have been relocated to. Slow the Plow: The Middlebury College Organic Garden is a community effort to grow food while fostering a land ethic, a community ethic, new ideas of sustainability, and what it means to live a good life. MCOG is a student-run garden that uses organic and permaculture practices to grow a variety of produce that the group sells to Middlebury College Dining Services and donates to the local food shelter. Volunteer Services Organization (VSO): VSO encourages the College community to get involved in public service locally, nationally, and internationally. A core group of students leads VSO in coordinating and publicizing volunteer opportunities. Events include: Into the Streets (October), Thanksgiving Food Drive (November), Community Breakfast for area elders (November/March), Hunger Cleanup (April), and weekly Saturday worksites partnering with individuals and agencies around the community.
