NIH Undergraduate scholarship Program offers competitive scholarships to students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are committed to careers in biomedical, behavioral, and social science health-related research. The program offers:
Up to $20,000 per academic year in tuition, educational expenses, and reasonable living expenses to scholarship recipients. Scholarships are awarded for 1 year, and can be renewed up to 4 years.

The Department of Homeland Security Scholarship and Fellowship Program
The Department of Homeland Security is accepting applications for the DHS Scholarship and Fellowship Program. This program is open to undergraduate and graduate students interested in pursuing the science and technology necessary to protect the nation against further terrorist attacks and protect the rights of American citizens. Areas of study include: physical, biological, social and behavioral sciences, engineering, mathematics, and computer science.

Udall Scholarships for Careers Related to the Environment
and Tribal Public Policy

Purpose: The Udall Foundation seeks future leaders across a wide spectrum of environmental fields, including policy, engineering, science, education, urban planning and renewal, business, health, justice, and economics. The Foundation also seeks future Native American and Alaska Native leaders in public and community health care, tribal government, and public policy affecting Native American communities, including land and resource management, economic development, and education.
Award: In 2008, the Foundation expects to award 80 scholarships and 50 honorable mentions on the basis of merit to sophomore and junior level college students. Scholarships are offered in any of three categories:
· To students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to the environment; or
· To Native American and Alaska Native students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to tribal public policy; or
· To Native American and Alaska Native students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to Native health care.
Eligibility
A sophomore or junior who is a U.S. citizen, permanent resident alien, or in the case of nominees from American Samoa or the Commonwealth of the Mariana Islands, a United States national. (Junior class applicants will have to be full-time students next year.)
Competitive applicants have a GPA of 3.5 or higher.
The Nomination Materials.
The following items are required for each nominee:
· A completed, signed Udall Scholarship Application;
· An 800-word essay, signed and dated;
· A current official college transcript and transcripts for other colleges attended;
· Three letters of recommendation.

Goldwater Scholarships - Research in Math and Natural Science
(Sophomores & Juniors)
Purpose
The Goldwater Scholarship program fosters and encourages excellence in mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering; it is also intended to protect U.S. leadership in science and technology by training future professionals in these fields.
Award
Each scholarship covers eligible expenses for undergraduate tuition, fees, books, and room and board, up to a maximum of $7,500 annually. (Special conditions may apply for students receiving financial aid.)
Several Middlebury students have won Goldwater Scholarships over the past few years. 300 scholarships are awarded annually.
Eligibility
Sophomores and Juniors who are U.S. citizens (or resident aliens) and plan to pursue careers in mathematics, natural sciences, or engineering. Competitive applicants have a GPA of 3.5 or higher.
Preference is given to those candidates who have participated in research. Students who demonstrate intellectual curiosity in other ways (such as an independent project or internship) may also be considered. Most candidates intend to pursue doctoral degrees. Those intending to become a medical doctor in private practice are ineligible.
