"Structural plasticity in the adult mammalian brain"
Dr. Elizabeth Gould is a leader in the field of neuroplasticity. Her research aims to identify the stimuli which drive changes in connections between neurons, especially new neuron formation in the adult brain (adult neurogenesis). This work has implications for the treatment of a variety of neurodegenerative diseases, and has provided insights regarding how memories are formed. Her research has identified a variety of environmental stimuli, including stress, physical activity, social interactions and learning as influential determinants of adult neurogenesis. Dr. Gould’s laboratory has also explored the hormonal and neuronal mechanisms that influence adult neurogenesis. The role that newly generated neurons play in brain function is an area of ongoing research.
