The College has a site license for ChemDraw Ultra, which we plan to renew on an annual basis as long as there is sufficient need. The software is now available as a downloadable file directly from Cambridge Software. To access the software you must have a valid middlebury college email address (xxx@middlebury.edu). This means the software is available to faculty and students for office, lab, and home use.
To install the software:
1) Go to ChemDraw Ultra where you will have to type in your middlebury email address. Note, you must use Microsoft Internet Explorer to complete this download.
2) You will then receive an email from support@chemstore.com with a new URL to download the software AND serial numbers to install and activate the software. KEEP this email, as you will need to retain the individual serial number that was sent to you if you want to install in more than one location (home & office)
3) This software can take quite a while to download (remember you are accessing this file from the Cambridge site, not a Middlebury College computer) so be prepared to wait. Typical download times are about one hour.
4) Once you have the file (cdu90.exe for windows users) downloaded to your computer, you can install the software by simply double-clicking the file and following the instructions in the install wizard.
Activation:
New to our 11.0/2008 software is Activation. Activation will be required for individuals who choose to install the software for home, office or personal user. For more details regarding activation, please follow the link below,
http://www.cambridgesoft.com/services/activation
New users will be downloading ChemDraw Ultra version 11. Those who are currently using ChemDraw Ultra version 9 (46 people plus the labs) & ChemDraw Ultra version 10 (54 people plus the labs) need only “reactivate,” to continue using ChemDraw Ultra version 9 & 10 respectively, or they can re-download to get ChemDraw Ultra version 11.
To re-download, go to the link above and override to re-download.
To reactivate, click “Reactivate” on the “Help” menu then put in your serial number from last year. Alternatively, the software will display a warning message one month before the previous expiration date, and users can click “Reactivate” then, directly from the warning message. If users have misplaced their serial number, they can look it up by logging in on our website and clicking “View Serial Numbers & Expiration Dates for Your Downloads”
TO FIND YOUR SERIAL NUMBER click on the activation URL above, login, then click on “View Serial Numbers & Expiration Dates for Your Downloads”
Some common Q&A's
Can faculty and students install the software at home?
Absolutely. A professor can install the software on a home computer. The software can be installed on home computers and school computers, or on many school computers. The same holds true for students. As long as they are covered by the site license at all, which means that they have a valid email address at your school, they can install the software on as many computers as they want.
I have a Mac, is this available to me?
Yes, the software is available for both Windows and Macintosh users. You will be sent serial numbers for both types of computers and you may choose which one to download from the Cambridge Software URL. Are Manuals available? Manuals are available to download in the form of PDF. They are available for download from the same site.
What happens after a year?
We expect that most schools will renew their license rather than let it expire. If your license expires, you will only lose the ability to create new data and to edit existing data. You will still be able to view any data you had created while under the site license.
What if the software is updated before our license expires? The Annual Site License allows you to use the latest version of the software, regardless of when that version was released. Each user will have to download and install the update, of course, but they are certainly allowed to do so under the terms of the license.
