On November 2, 2007, Roger Sandwick, Department Chair, hosted a wild and crazy contest to see which Chemistry & Biochemistry faculty member could produce the most "explosive" experiment.  Middlebury students had a chance to see some amazing science and find out how much fun chemistry and biochemistry can be!

Roger Sandwick's cork popped off so far and so fast it wasn't recordable on film!
Rick Bunt's balloon explosion also defied digital capturing!
But he scared us all with his HUGE burst of flames!
Wild and crazy Jeff Byers won first prize with his huge flare ups!
Molly Costanza-Robinson illustrated the effects of acid rain on a rubber ducky!
Jim Larrabee built a solid tower out of liquid ????
Bob Cluss made some liver explode into instant foam!
Steve Sontum made a toilet bomb!
Peggy Daugherty made a delicious lava cake!
Kurt Schaberg '09 and Ben Fowler '09 helped Sunhee Choi top off the excitment by making yummy chocolate ice cream for everyone... using liquid nitrogen!
The students had a great time and even learned a little science!  The Big Chemistry Blow Up was a "roaring" success!

Thank you, Chemistry & Biochemistry Department!
