The Chinese Department offers a structured sequence of instruction in language skills, from the fundamental to the sophisticated, that guides the learner towards proficiency in spoken and written Mandarin, which is the national language of mainland China and Taiwan, and an increasingly important medium of commercial and cultural interaction.
Our language courses train students in not only speaking, listening, reading and writing, but also in cultural knowledge. In addition, the department offers several courses that introduce Chinese literature and culture through the study of selected works of literature in English translation; these courses are taught in English and are available to all interested students.
