My teaching concentrates on the language and literature of the Classical world, with a special focus on ancient Rome. I offer courses in ancient Greek and Latin at all levels, and introductory lecture classes on Roman literature and on the age of Augustus. I have also taught seminars on ancient heroism, the history of Classical literature, and Roman epic. In all my teaching, I try to show how literary traditions develop, and how they give voice to important cultural ideas.

My research focuses on the literature and society of the Roman Empire, from the emperor Augustus (27 BCE-14 CE) to Domitian (81-96 CE). I am currently working on a series of college-level Latin commentaries on Vergil’s Aeneid, and am completing a book on Statius’ Thebaid, an epic about the fraternal war fought between Oedipus’ sons, published at the end of the first century CE. In this book I explore how the Thebaid alludes to the Aeneid
