My courses have three foci: the history of Jewish thought, particularly the modern period, including the Zionist movement; theories of religion, and classical Hebrew.
In my research I work on German-Jewish thought and culture, the philosophy of Hermann Cohen and its legacy, including its continuing significance in debates on Jewish nationalism. In a nod to local history, I recently published a documentary analysis of the oldest Minutes Book of a Vermont Jewish community. The Minutes Book is, at the same time, a window on the linguistics of the Western Yiddish imported by German Jews to rural Vermont in the 19th century.
