Classical Studies
The Classical Studies Program at Middlebury is itself a testament to the advantages of a classical education. The courses are drawn from various departments and illustrate how the classics are the foundation upon which so many disciplines are built.
Unlike the classics major which requires that students learn two ancient languages, a student majoring in classical studies learns one of the classical languages and pursues a wider range of courses in classical civilization. The classical studies program is designed to offer a broad, rigorous, general education based on the careful study of fundamental classical works of history, philosophy, and literature. The interdisciplinary nature of the study is reflected by a teaching staff that includes faculty in the departments of classics, history of art and architecture, philosophy, political science, and religion.
