A Robot That Solves Rubik's Cube
Daniel Scharstein and Felix Scharstein
In 1986, just after having finished high school, brothers Daniel and Felix Scharstein constructed a device called "the cube solver". This small robot is able to -- totally autonomously -- solve a scrambled Rubik's Cube. After winning a German science competition in 1987, the brothers were featured on German talk shows and even got to meet Erno Rubik, the inventor of the famous puzzle. Now, almost two decades later, they will explain and demonstrate the cube solver here at Middlebury. The presentation will touch on issues in sensing, mechanics, electronics, mathematics, and computer science. The talk will be accessible to a general audience, although it will be helpful to have a vague idea of what Rubik's Cube looks like.
