Pattern Matching with Points and Polygons
Matthew Dickerson
Professor of Computer Science
Middlebury College
Suppose you have a pattern of some polygonal object (anything from a room in a building to a cross-sectional slice of an engine part to be manufactured), and you have a discrete set of points that come from an actual object, and you want to know if the actual object matches the polygonal pattern. We will discuss geometric algorithms to solve this problem from an application area known as geometric tolerancing and metrology—and we will see that it has applications also to robot navigation and pattern matching in computer vision.
