Real-World Geographical Information Systems
 Programming and Applications

David Felcan
Avencia, Inc.
Philadelphia, PA

Maps and spatial information have moved firmly into the digital realm, and new ways of accessing and working with that information are being developed all the time. GPS and sophisticated geocoding have generated a torrent of spatial information. While popular services such as Google Maps and associated "mashup" websites are in the limelight, there is much more to Geographical Information Systems (GIS) than these sites.

This talk will focus on what sort of technologies are being used in today's computer industry to collect, analyze and display spatial information, with some emphasis on web-based geospatial programming. A broad overview of contemporary GIS will be given, along with demonstrations of modern software engineering and practice as applied to GIS. There will be an in-depth look at a web-based GIS application currently in use at the Philadelphia Police Department.
