Getting a Feel for Haptic Robotic Control
Brendan Burns
Union College
There are currently an estimated 4.5 million robots active in the world. Increasingly, like Roomba or Packbot, these robots are being deployed into situations where they are being operated by novices with little or no prior experience controlling a robot. Consequently, successful and safe control of these robots can not come from extensive training and experience; instead it must come from innovative interfaces which provide natural and compelling feedback to novice users. One possibility for such an interface is haptics, in particular, the use of force feedback to provide users with guidance for desirable robotic motion. This talk presents some of the issues in novice robotic control as well as work in progress developing a haptic interface for mobile robot navigation. A demonstration of the current prototype interface will also be available for examination and interaction.
