How Cell Phones Work

Robert Martin
Middlebury College
Dept. of Computer Science

The past 15 years have been referred to by some as the “golden years of cellular telephony”. Cell phones are leading the way towards a more mobile form of human communication yet very few users know how they work. For example, with all of the wireless communication taking place, how does one cell phone “tune in” to the signal sent by another? In this seminar, we will discuss cell phone technology and, in particular, how two cell phones establish and maintain a “connection”.
