Culture as Creative Process

Christal Brown (choreographer, educator, performer, writer, activist) has performed with Chuck Davis. African-American Dance Ensemble, Andrea E. Woods/Souloworks, Gesel Mason Performance Projects, and the the Liz Lerman Dance Exchange. Upon relocating to New York she apprenticed with the Bill T Jones/ Arnie Zane Dance Company before . nding a home with Urban Bush Women. Brown is the Founding Artistic Director of INSPIRIT, a performance ensemble and educational conglomerate dedicated to bringing female choreographers together to collaborate and show new work. Combining her athleticism, creativity, and love for people, and knack for teaching Brown continues to teach and create works that rede. ne the art of dance and the structure of the . eld. We are pleased to welcome Christal Brown to the Dance Program this January.

The Dance Company of Middlebury
The 2007–2008 Dance Company of Middlebury, directed by Tiffany Rhynard, presents I.m Right, You.re Wrong, an interdisciplinary and multi-media investigation of the complexity of con. ict and the mechanics of consequence. The evening-length piece dissects intricate layers of equality, privilege, and justice, while an interactive media interface created by New York-based artist Marlon Barrios Solano engages performer and audience in technological communication, encouraging the viewer to act as witness, judge, and jury. Company members include Alena Giesche .10, James Gutierrez .07, Adriane Medina .08, Yina Ng .09, and Simon Thomas-Train .09. Sponsored by the Dance Program with the Academic Outreach Endowment and the Committee on the Arts. Tickets: $5/4/3.
The company will be on tour in the San Francisco Bay area from January 29-February 5, including performances at the Monterey Institute of International Studies, Mills College, and the Temescal Performing Arts Center. February 7-10
American College Dance Festival
Eight students will be involved with the American College Dance Festival, held this year at Connecticut College. This is a national festival that brings together college dancers to take classes from diverse teachers, meet other dancers, see performances, present creative work in a supportive environment, and receive feedback from professional artists in the field. Two student pieces will be adjudicated.

Leyya Tawil.s company Dance Elixir presents CAPITAL LIFE TRIPTYCH, a powerful and insightful series that uses choreography grounded in the power, weight and speed of the human body to investigate three facets of contemporary culture: mass media, political landscaping, and individual stance. The work features original music by Dance Elixir.s resident composer Topher Keyes and composer Mark Gergis. The program also features their recent repertory work Raincoat Rebellion, performed with an original score by renowned composer Stephen Rush. Sponsored by the Middlebury College Performing Arts Series. Tickets: $15/12/5

Macolm Manning Residence
European dancer Malcolm Manning offers master classes in experiential anatomy, contact improvisation, and a showing of improvised performance. A lunch-time discussion "Dancing in Europe" will be held in the Dance Green Room (bring your lunch!). Malcolm is a somatic movement researcher, educator and artist based in Helskinki, Finland who teaches and performs internationally. He currently works as a Feldenkrais practitioner, teaches Improvisation for Performance, directs the BodySchool, and is involved an MA/PhD program at the Theatre Academy in Helsinki (TEAK). This performance and discussion by Andrea Olsen, professor of Dance and associate in Environmental Studies, is part of the ES Colloquium Series.
