Below is a list of approved programsin the United Kingdom and Ireland.  By clicking on a particular university or college you will be directed to their respective English departments.  Many of the programs below are full year; however, many also offer shorter periods of study as well.  Programs in literature may also be undertaken in other various countries throughout the world including Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa.  It is also possible, with approval, to take a literature class in a foreign language and have it count towards the English major.  Many of the programs also offer creative writing courses. Each year many English majors pursue study abroad options.  Below, one current senior recounts his experience and how it has broadened and deepened his understanding of literature in general.

Study Abroad Profile

Name: Mike McCarthy
Major: English
Abroad Location: Galway, Ireland

Mike McCarthy attended the National University of Ireland in Galway for a year.  As an English major he enrolled in a number of literature classes including Post-Modernism and Drama and Theater Studies. His favorite and most rewarding class was a seminar on Joyce and Keats.  "I spent half the year reading Ulysses. Ireland is the perfect place to read it, to be able to go back to Dublin and be able to trace whatever steps you want."
