The formal part of the NEES program traditionally revolves around (a) focused discussion on topics of interest to us all, and (b) field trips to local sites of interest. This is a tentative list, intended to gauge your collective interest and stimulate your thinking about other possibilities.

Possible breakout sessions for Saturday

  • The relationship between ES Programs and Campus Sustainability initiatives
  • Campus initiatives to address climate change
  • Junior faculty development in ES Programs
  • Using and managing campus lands for teaching and research
  • Integrating Environmental Studies disciplines at the introductory level
  • Program assessment

Possible field trips for Saturday/Sunday

  • Old growth forest and mountain wetlands walk (Green Mountains near the Bread Loaf campus)
  • Allochthon (i.e., an isolated thrust-sheet mountain sitting in a valley bottom) hike (Snake Mountain, with spectacular views of the Adirondacks, Lake Champlain, and the Champlain Valley)
  • Birding trip through a valley bottom wildlife refuge (Dead Creek Wildlife Management Area)
