What classes are offered in Film & Media Studies?
The Program in Film and Media Culture is dedicated to the study of film and visual media as a vital aspect of a liberal arts education. Our students will study film and visual media as products with intrinsic significance as well as in relation to the cultures that produced them. Our goals are to provide students with a broad historical and international background in film and visual media; to help students develop a familiarity with the formal properties of film and visual media; to help students develop critical and analytical tools for the study of film and visual media; to encourage students to ask meaningful questions of the film and visual media by seeing them as manifestations of culture in a historical context; and to provide the opportunity for students to produce media works similar to those under study.

What equipment and facilities are provided for Film & Media students?
The program offers student access to a sophisticated array of video production technology including two video editing rooms with three non-linear computer editing systems. Students shoot with 1/2", and DV video cameras. Screening facilities in 35mm, 16mm and video projection are available for large public screenings in Twilight and Dana Auditoriums. Small viewing rooms and individual viewing stations are also provided in the Media Center, which houses over five thousand film/video titles (on VHS, Laserdisk, DVD, and 16mm film) that are available for classroom screening and individual study. The College library contains an extensive collection of screenplays.

Who teaches Film & Media courses?
Five professors teach a full program of courses in video production and critical studies, and in addition, professors from the Creative Writing and the Dramatic Literature programs of the English Department regularly offer film-video courses. Professors from various other disciplines offer film courses in departments such as Philosophy, American Studies, Art History, Japanese, Italian, German and French. Small classes and low student/teacher ratios allow for a close working relationship between student and teacher.

What special Film & Media events are sponsored on campus?
In addition to presenting nightly screenings, Film and Media Culture Studies regularly hosts distinguished visiting lecturers and artists. Recent guests have included Rob Perez'95, Tom Gunning, Bruce Jenkins, Stephen Prince, P. Adams Sitney, Buky Schwartz, among others.

What career opportunities are available to Film & Media majors upon graduation?
An array of Middlebury alumni hold professional positions in the media industries including advertising, film and television positions in New York and Los Angeles. Through an active alumni network the college assists undergraduates in obtaining internships and also aids graduates in pursuing career opportunities or in undertaking advanced study in media.
