Before coming to Middlebury College, Perry was the Director of the Film Department at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, Chair of Cinema Studies at New York University, and taught at SUNY Purchase, Harvard University, the University of Texas-Austin, and at the University of Iowa (where he received his Ph.D.). For 10 years he was a trustee of the American Film Institute. He has written and edited articles and books on avantgarde film, and on the filmmakers Michelangelo Antonioni, Federico Fellini, Robert Gardner, and the sculptor Buky Schwartz. His most recent publications include a memoir (My Reel Story), a collection of essays on Modernist films (Masterpieces of Modernist Cinema) and an article on certain psychoanalytic aspects of three films ("Impersonation of the True Self").
