Professor Herb's work deals largely with nationalism and territoriality, specifically with respect to German identity and European integration. He is also interested in the use of maps as propaganda and the history of geography. Currently he is working on two major projects:

(1) Second edition of the Perthes World Atlas (with David Kaplan and Mark Monmonier)

(2) Nations and Nationalism: A Global Historical Overview (4 vols),with David Kaplan, published by ABC-Clio in 2008.  A total of seven geography majors worked as his research assistants on this project: Gruia Badescu, who co-authored two introductory chapters with Professor Herb; Jonathan Hsu, who designed and produced most of the maps with Conor Stinson; Zachary Hecht-Leavitt, who helped editing; and Caitlin Sargent, Mithra Harivandi, Samuel Lazarus.
