Below is a map of the outdoor recreation opportunities in the Manchester area of southern Vermont, produced over the course of a summer by Garrott Kuzzy '06 as part of an internship.

For many years, the local business in Manchester, Vermont including the Mountain Goat and Orvis have been working with the local land trusts and conservation organizations to promote recreation and protect the natural resources of the region.   This cooperation is seen as mutually beneficial as it attracts tourism that supports local businesses and provides funds for enhanced conservation initiatives.  The natural amenities in the region are significant and include the Green Mountain National Forest, Lye Brook Wilderness area and the Merck Forest and Farmland Center.

For many years the local businesses and land trusts have been using inadequate and outdated maps to guide tourists and visitors.   The main goal of this project was to produce an up-to-date, accurate, easy-to-use, aesthetic recreation map of the region.

The intern, Garrott Kuzzy, worked with several individuals from the region to develop the needed map.  The map production required significant research into cartographic representation and map design.  The latest data sources were identified and incorporated into the map.  While the product is a static map, it was designed using a GIS and was made with the intent of being easily updated.  The map will be printed and distributed free of charge through several local stores, information kiosks, and local conservation organizations.

Clicking on the thumbnail will bring up a larger image, though please note that this map as printed is roughly 3' x 4' and so the quality here is much lower.
