Major, History of Art Emphasis (12 Courses)
Requirements:
HARC 100, survey in Western art (or the previously offered HARC 101, HARC 110, or HARC 111) Note: A.P. art history credit score of 4 or 5 would be accepted for this course. Students seeking A.P. credit in art history should therefore not enroll in this course.
HARC 102, survey in non-Western art or a course in non-Western art history (or the previously offered HARC 103)
One course in studio art
At least six additional courses in the history of art or architecture distributed among several historical periods or traditions and taken above the 100 level (Note: Students who have taken two of the previously offered HARC 101, HARC 110 and HARC 111 need only five elective courses) HARC 300 (Spring) is strongly recommended for sophomores.
HARC 700 Methods and Theories
HARC 710 and HARC 711 (senior thesis)
Advisories:
It is not possible to pursue a double or joint major with another department that also requires participation in Winter term of senior year.
Graduate programs in the history of art and classical archaeology require students to pass reading examinations in at least two foreign languages, typically French and German.
Because senior thesis work occurs over the course of three semesters (Fall, Winter, Spring), Feb entrants begin this series of courses in the Fall term of their junior year

A proposed program of study, including educational rationale and specific courses to be taken, must be submitted to the department for approval before registering as a joint major.

It is strongly recommended that these deal specifically with issues or architecture, urbanism, or contemporary art . HARC 430 is strongly recommended for Fall term prior to senior architectural design work. (Note: Students who have taken two of the previously offered HARC 101, HARC 110 and HARC 111 need only three elective courses)
HARC 730 and HARC 731 (senior architectural design, Winter and Spring terms)
