In celebration of the 100th birthday of Professor Emeritus of Mathematics Don Ballou, the mathematics and computer science department at Middlebury sponsored a lecture in his honor on Tuesday, April 8, at 4:15 p.m. by Bill Beckmann, president and co-founder of Network Computing Associates and a former Middlebury faculty member, on the alternative minimum tax (AMT), which has been much discussed over the past several years. The talk focuses on a way to eliminate the AMT while maintaining the fundamental theme on which the AMT was originally built. Beckmann’s lecture will provide an interesting blend of theoretical mathematics and real-world computer science, illustrating how the two can partner.
Professor Ballou attended the talk and was given a short introduction by his former student, Bruce Peterson, himself now a professor at Middlebury. Don Ballou began teaching mathematics in 1934. He was a member of the Middlebury faculty from 1942 to 1973 and was a pioneer of computer science at the College.
