Problem Contest – Problem of the Week – November 11, 2003

Random numbers between 0 and 1: A uniform random spinner can randomly produce any real number between 0 and 1 because the tip on its pointer is infinitely sharp. If X, Y, and Z are each selected independently and at random from the interval [0, 1], what is the probability that X > YZ?

Submit written solution with justification to John Emerson, Warner 312, before 3:00 on Tuesday, November 18.  Or leave them in the Warner mailroom.

Note:  Join us at the weekly seminars, usually on Tuesday at 3:00 for refreshments.
