Problem Contest – Problem of the Week – February 17, 2004

A Problem about a Trip: Mike and Pete drove in separate cars from Middlebury to Norwich, leaving Middlebury at the same time. If they each drove exactly at the posted speed limit – 50 miles per hour for the first half of the trip and then 65 miles per hour for the second half of the trip – they evidently arrive at Norwich at the same time.  However, Mike decided to make a 15 minute stop during the first leg of the trip, and then resumed driving without making any other stops.  Pete drove straight through the first part of the trip, but them stopped for 15 minutes during the second leg of the journey – the part with the 65 mph limit. Which of the two gets to the Norwich hockey rink first? (Credit: ASK MARILYN column in PARADE magazine (?))
