"Polynomials as Approximating Functions"
Polynomials are often used to provide analytical functions that can easily be evaluated, differentiated or integrated; they are thus ideal when you need to fit a function to an experimental data-set, or to store a highly-accurate and easily computed approximation to a function, such as sin (x), in a pocket calculator. This problem eventually leads to orthonormal polynomials, Fourier Series, etc.
