Summing Series:
from the alternating harmonic series to the Stark Conjectures

David Dummit

University of Vermont

This talk will discuss the classical problem of finding explicit values for some infinite series and the relation to problems involving prime numbers.  Concentraing on the so-called "Dirichlet L-series" - one example of which is the alternating sum of the positive odd integers - the talk will try to indicate some of the main ideas linking algebraic and analytic number theory.  As time permits, the talk will end with a description of the Stark Conjecture.
