Monday 7:00 – 8:30 PM

Thursday 4:30 – 6:00 PM

(both ensembles)

Middlebury joins a 150-year-old tradition of choral ensembles in the US with the establishment of these two new ensembles. Both will perform regularly throughout the year, separately and in combination with other Middlebury choral ensembles.

About the Middlebury College Choir

The College Choir is an ensemble of 40-48 singers by audition whose repertoire includes choral masterworks of Western music, folk music, world music and new compositions. The Choir regularly performs choral-orchestral works with members of the College Orchestra. Student soloists are featured regularly, and recent repertoire has included Missa Brevis in B Flat by Wolfgang Mozart, choruses from “The Lark” by Leonard Bernstein, Iranian folk and classical music and American folk song.

The College Choir holds a choral retreat at the beginning of fall semester, performs concerts each semester and sings for Baccalaureate and other College functions. In recent years the Senior Week Choral Concert has become a traditional favorite of the college and community audience.

A brief history of choirs at Middlebury

The Middlebury College Choir has been a part of college life for decades. Under three different conductors, the College Choir toured the USA, performed at Carnegie Hall and recorded Lessons and Carols services in Mead Chapel at Middlebury and televised nationwide.

Middlebury choral ensembles have long included a Community Chorus, and in 1999 the Chamber Singers was formed to offer a chamber singing experience to college students. In its first season the Chamber Singers toured in London, Oxford, and Paris. The Chamber Singers, College Choir and Community Chorus sang together in the College's bicentennial Continental Harmony concert in November 2000. In spring 2002, the Chamber Singers joined the Dartmouth College Chamber Singers for performances at Middlebury and Dartmouth of Leonard Bernstein's Chichester Psalms, conducted by Dartmouth's Timothy Newton, and works by Morten Lauridsen and Arvo Pärt, conducted by Middlebury's Jeff Rehbach. The Chamber Singers performances included “Nowell Sing We” concerts that featured a cappella Advent and Christmas music from the Renaissance and the 20th century. The Community Chorus eventually combined with the College Choir to become the College-Community Chorus.

Dr. Jeff Buettner was appointed the newly developed Director of Choral Activities in the fall of 2007, and the Middlebury College Choir replaced the Chamber Singers as the primary student choral ensemble.

In fall of 2008, two new choral ensembles were born: the Men’s and Women’s Glee Clubs. Developed in response to the increase in auditions for choral ensembles on campus, the Glee Clubs offer a unique repertoire and atmosphere of collegiality to student singers.
