Middlebury College Music Department
Instrument and Equipment Policy
Music Department instruments are intended primarily for departmental activities. At times, they MAY be made available to students to use in the CFA for practice and rehearsal. For the most part, Music Department instruments and equipment do not leave the Center for the Arts.
Exceptions (arrangements must always be made ahead of time):
- When used by a group or individual rehearsing or performing in a faculty-sponsored ensemble.
- For use by a music major doing a performance.
- For use by a student-administered group, like an accapella group or musical production
- For class work, including independent study projects.
Drum set: under no circumstance is the drum set in CFA 217 or large instrument storage to be taken from the building. On occasion, arrangements can be made to borrow one of the music department drum sets in the FIC music studio.
In the rare instance that music department instruments are allowed to leave the building, all faculty members and students must schedule out-of-the-Center for the Arts use of instruments ahead of time. This is to avoid the conflict of two different ensembles or people assuming they will have use of an instrument. Contact the departmental coordinator at ext. 5221 or young@middlebury.edu. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD AN INSTRUMENT BE USED WITHOUT PIOR E-MAIL OR WRITTEN PERMISSION. This schedule will be posted in large instrument storage. If you don't see your name on the schedule, please don't take the instrument without contacting someone from the department. Priority will be given to faculty-sponsored music department ensembles rehearsing/performing in the Center for the Arts. When the Orchestra, Jazz Combo Workshop, Sound Investments, Chamber Singers, and College-Community Choir have their scheduled rehearsals, it assumed that they are first priority for all instruments and equipment.
Students may be asked to sign a release saying they will take responsibility for loss or damage to an instrument.
