Middlebury College has the largest and best-equipped observatory of any institution—public or private—in the state of Vermont. The observatory is atop McCardell Bicentennial Hall, Middlebury's science center. To find the observatory, locate Bicentennial Hall on the Campus Map. The observatory consists of a dome, which houses the 24-inch DFM Engineering telescope, a telescope control room, and also the observing deck, which is equipped with three smaller optical telescopes and a radio telescope.

During the summer months and a few times during the school year the College opens the observatory to the public. These are typically scheduled for several Wednesday nights in the summer and Friday evenings in the fall, and take place provided skies are clear. Open house nights are announced on the College's home page, and e-mail announcements are sent to students, faculty and staff.
