RESEARCH INTERESTS

Positive & Prosocial Emotions, Emotional Expression, Emotional Complexity, Culture and Emotion

My research centers on the function of emotion in everyday life, emotional expression, and cultural influences on emotion processes. One line of my research focuses on emotional reactions to others’ distress and suffering— in particular empathy, sympathy, and compassion. In another line of work, I examine the influence of Chinese epistemologies on the experience of emotion. I have also studied the use of human expression and morphology to improve human-robot interaction.
