The dates listed below are general guidelines for completing a Psychology or Neuroscience Honors Thesis. A few of the dates are firm, non-negotiable deadlines. The remaining dates are provided as suggestions to help you manage your time. Obviously, you will want to consult with your thesis advisor about your progress throughout the semester.

Summary of Non-negotiable Deadlines

  • Monday, Sept. 24, 2007 : Proposal summary and possible committee members
  • Monday, Dec. 3, 2007 : Completed proposal
  • Monday, April 28, 2008 : Completed project

Confirm that you have a firm commitment from your thesis advisor to work with you

Monday, September 24

Submit to Suzanne Gurland:

  • A list of 3 department faculty members who you would like to serve on your committee. The department will assign a second faculty member to combine with your thesis advisor to form your thesis committee. We will try to assign you one of the committee members you request, although sometimes this is not possible.
  • A one- to two-page summary of your proposed project. Please include as much detail as possible about your project.

Friday, September 28

Submit a request to the senior work fund and senior work fellowship. Questions about Senior Work Fund and Senior Work Fellowship may be addressed to Penny Deacon, Assistant to the Associate Dean of College, at extension 5771. Monday, October 29

Complete draft of thesis Introduction

Friday, November 9

Complete draft of Methods and Results sections

Schedule meeting with thesis committee to discuss proposed study

Mid-November

Submit proposal to IRB or IACUC for approval (if applicable)

Monday, December 3 5:00pm

Submit completed proposal (including Introduction, Methods, and Proposed Data Analysis sections in APA style) to both members of your committee and to Suzanne Gurland.

Tuesday, December 18

You will hear from your thesis advisor whether you have been admitted to Honors Candidacy.

Aim to have all your data collected

February – April

Analyze data; revise Introduction and Methods; write and revise Results and Discussion; complete References; all in APA style

Monday, April28 5:00pm

Final thesis due

In addition to submitting your written thesis, you are expected to:

  • Present your project to the psychology/neuroscience department faculty and students during the final week of classes (presentations typically last 10-15 minutes)
  • Meet with your advisor and other committee member for a comprehensive exam and oral defense of your thesis during the final exam period
  • Attend the Thesis Student Meetings and the departmental speaker series
