Proposed Timeline for Psychology and Selected Neuroscience Honors Theses

The dates listed below are guidelines for completing a Psychology or Neuroscience Honors Thesis. A few of the dates are firm, non-negotiable deadlines. The remaining dates are provided as suggestions to help you manage your time and are to be discussed with your thesis supervisor.

Summary of non-negotiable thesis deadlines

  • Monday, September 21, 2009: Proposal summary and possible committee members
  • Monday, November 30, 2009: Submit complete thesis proposal
  • Monday, April 26, 2010: Submit complete thesis

By Friday, Sept. 18

Confirm that you have a commitment from your thesis advisor to work with you.

Monday, Sept. 21

Submit to Prof. Kimble:

  • A list of 3 department faculty members you wish to recommend as possible members of your thesis committee. Each student will have a thesis committee of three members – the advisor and two other faculty members. The department will try to assign you one of the committee members you request, where possible.
  • A one- to two-page summary of your proposed project. Please include as much detail as possible about your project.

By Friday, Sept. 25

  • Submit a request to the Senior Work Fund and/or Senior Research Fellowship. Monday, October 26

Complete draft of thesis Introduction (the first section of your proposal)

Friday, November 6

Complete draft of Methods and Results sections

Schedule meeting with thesis committee to discuss proposed study

Mid-November or sooner, as needed

Submit proposal to IRB or IACUC for approval (as applicable). Discuss timelines with advisor well in advance, and consult college web pages for the appropriate committee information and schedule. Plan ahead!

Mid-November

Schedule a meeting with your thesis committee. Prepare a short synopsis of your thesis introduction and your methodology to discuss at this meeting.

Monday, Nov. 30

5:00 pm

Submit completed proposal (including Introduction, Methods, and Proposed Data Analysis sections in APA style) to each member of your committee and to Prof. Kimble.

By Tuesday, Dec. 15

You will hear from your thesis advisor whether you have been admitted to Honors Candidacy.

Overall Timeline: Winter & Spring Semester (if admitted to Honors Candidacy)

Aim to have all your data collected by end of Winter Term

February – April

Analyze data; revise Introduction and Methods; write and revise Results and Discussion; complete the References section; all in APA style

Monday, April 26, 5:00pm

Final thesis due

Week of May 3

Present your project to the psychology/neuroscience department faculty and students (usually about 15 minutes each) and attend others’ presentations

May 11th or 12th

Meet with your thesis committee for an oral defense of your thesis

In addition, as an honors thesis student, you are expected to:

  • Attend the Thesis Seminar
  • Attend the Departmental Speaker Series
