Professor Stearns teaches courses on Islamic thought in the Medieval and Modern period. His research interests include the history of Muslim Spain and North Africa, Islamic Law and Theology, and Muslim and Christian perceptions of each other. He is currently finishing a book on the concept of contagion in pre-Modern Muslim and Christian thought, and is beginning a project on the social status of science in the Muslim World in the Early Modern period. Professor Stearns came to Middlebury College in September 2005.
