B.A., Oberlin College; M.A., Ph.D., University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Jason Mittell previously taught Communication at Georgia State University and received his Ph.D. in Communication Arts at University of Wisconsin-Madison. His book, Genre and Television: From Cop Shows to Cartoons in American Culture, was released in May 2004.

His research interests include television history and criticism, media and cultural history, genre theory, narratology, animation and children's media, cultural historiography, race and gender studies, and new media studies & technological convergence. He is currently writing a book on contemporary American television narrative, and a textbook entitled Television and American Culture.
