If you are planning a career in medicine, law, or dentistry, and indeed a large number of Middlebury graduates enter these professional schools each year, don't look for a major labeled pre-med, pre-law, or pre-dentistry. At Middlebury, these and other pre-professional areas of study (engineering, architecture, business administration, nursing, veterinary medicine) are programs, not majors. Why? Because Middlebury believes that a liberal arts curriculum develops the critical thinking skills that are essential for beginning any career or profession.

Middlebury faculty help students get into the graduate or professional school of their choice in the following ways:

  • Advising students on selection of courses necessary in order to be considered a viable candidate at leading medical or other professional graduate programs.
  • Assisting students with the application process
  • Providing students with the necessary recommendations

Many Middlebury students go on to careers in education. They may prepare to teach in either the public or private sector through the Teacher Education Program. Students participating in the program graduate with a Vermont teaching license. Vermont public school licensure is recognized in 36 states and the District of Columbia.
