Credit-Bearing Options for J-term off-campus study:
Internships: contact the Career Services Office (www.middlebury.edu/administration/cso)
Independent Projects: If the project is unrelated to your major, apply to the Curriculum Committee by contacting Janis Audet from the Office of the Dean of Faculty (email: jaudet@middlebury.edu, phone: x2207). Independent work proposed through a student's major must be approved by the chair or director of that department or program. These proposals do not need to be submitted to the Curriculum Committee.
Short-Term Study Abroad Programs: contact International Programs and Off-Campus Study and see additional information below.
Non-Credit Options for J-term off-campus:
If you do not need the credit and want to go for the experience alone, then you should register for the winter-term opt-out course.
(If you have missed the deadline to opt-out of J-term before the end of web registration for winter-term in November, you must go to your Commons Dean and request to be temporarily withdrawn for winter-term.)
Short Term Study Abroad Programs:
Consult the following websites:
www.iiepassport.org
www.studyabroad.com
www.goabroad.com
You can also ask your academic adviser for suggestions, and/or talk to International Programs and Off-Campus Study to find out what worked for previous students who have studied abroad during winter-term.
Program Approval:
You must apply to International Programs and Off-Campus Study by October 15 for pre-approval of winter-term off-campus courses. No courses/programs will be approved after the fact. Programs must be at least four complete weeks long (regardless of the total number of contact hours) to earn a maximum of one unit of Middlebury credit. The program/course must meet for at least the same number of hours, over the four weeks, as an equivalent Middlebury course. A program that meets more than 36 hours will NOT receive additional credit. Only a program/course that meets the definition of “liberal arts,” (in other words, you may not take courses that are of a pre-professional nature such as business, journalism, etc.), and receives a letter grade of C- or better, may be applied to the Middlebury College degree. Programs/courses graded on a pass/fail basis or audited are NOT transferable. The transcript reflecting work completed must be issued by an accredited institution of higher education. You will be notified of your status once International Programs and Off-Campus Study reviews your application.
