Peer Writing Tutors for your Classes

Please read about the value of using peer writing tutors in your classes and review our guidelines for working with them on the Peer Writing Tutor Weblog compiled by Mary Ellen Bertolini, Assistant Director of the Writing Program.

Creating Community in the Classroom

We hope that you will consider the ways in which creating community through writing, both within the classroom and without, can be nurtured by particular assignments, such as the "Knowledge Tree," often implemented in Writing Workshops. Click here for the general guidelines for the assignment. Also see examples of how it's being implemented in the Irish Lit/Film class and in Project Harmony. (Contributed by Hector Vila)

Responding to Student Work

The following Hand Outs may be used for student writing workshops and/or as check-sheets for peer tutors and faculty responding to student work.

Using Technology in the Writing Classroom

Course Weblogs provide a valuable arena for class discussions, for posting writing assignments, for peer review, multi media work, and for connecting classes to the outside world. They also serve as easily updated course management tools. To see a sampling of course weblogs and other web initiatives, please explore our section on Weblogs.

To read critical reflections and anecdotes about media experiences in the classroom and beyond, and more about the purpose and challenge of using technology in education, explore the weblogs of two writing faculty: Barbara Ganley in bgblogging, and Hector Vila in mediainquirydotorg.

Help us Compile Assignments and Writing Samples

In our effort to serve faculty at Middlebury College, the Writing Program is currently creating an online archive of writing assignments across the curriculum, and models of exemplary student writing. To help us in our process, please send electronic versions of your favorite assignments, models of student work, and resources about responding to student writing to cwwright@middlebury.edu. Hard copies may be sent to 225G, Center for Teaching, Learning and Research, Library.
