Gallery talk by New York artist Andrea Cohen, who will be exhibiting a group of sculptures and installations in the Johnson Gallery from February 9 to March 6. Her works are known for their riotous color, structural innovations, and ingenious use of common materials.

Werewere Liking and Ki-Yi Tour: Werewere Liking is an internationally renowned Cameroonian female playwright and novelist who had to leave her native Cameroon and her family to seek political asylum in Ivory Coast. She created Ki-Yi Village, a school for orphans who learn to dance, play music, tell stories, and act on stage. At Middlebury, Werewere will perform "Les immortelles des reines-mères" together with eight other actors. Co-sponsored by the Office of Institutional Diversity, WAGS, RJCFIA, the Foreign Language Division, the French Dept., Cook, Ross and Wonnacott Commons, Cook and Atwater Student Councils, the PALANA Center, the German Dept., the Pooled Enrichment Fund, and the Stephen A. Jennifer Finney Boylan will read from her book She's Not There: A Life in Two Genders.The reading will be followed by a dessert reception. Boylan is the co-chair of the English Department at Colby College, where she was voted Professor of the Year in 2000. In her memoir, she describes her transition from male to female. "Laments of the Arabian Peninsula: Women and the Translation of Arabic Literature," a lecture by Michelle Hartman, Assistant Professor of Arabic Language and Literature at McGill University in Montreal. Her book, Joseph, Jesus and Job: Reading Rescriptings of Religious Figures in Lebanese Women's Fiction was published in 2002, as was her translation of the Syrian novel Just Like a River. "The New Latin American Fiction," a lecture by Mayra Santos-Febres, Visiting Professor of Romance Languages and Literatures and of Ethnic Studies, Harvard University; Associate Professor of Literature, University of Puerto Rico. Mayra Santos-Febres is a Puerto Rican poet, novelist, and critic who has garnered fame at home and abroad. One of her most acclaimed books is Sirena Selena (Selena the Siren), in which she describes the life of a teenage homosexual male who works in the streets and has is a talented singer. Co-sponsored by RCFIA, the Spanish and Sociology/Anthropology Departments, and WAGS.

"Young Feminist: Activist, Volunteer, Leader." A one-day gathering with Amy Richards and Dawn Martin, co-founders of the New-York based Third Wave Foundation, the only national philanthropic organization for young women between the ages of 15 and 30. Third Wave informs and empowers a generation of young feminists through its network, public education campaigns, and grant-making. The morning lecture will be followed by lunch and two workshops. Co-sponsored by the "Raise Your Voice – Student Action for Change Campaign," by the Middlebury College Alliance for Civil Engagement, and by WAGS.
