To the Middlebury College community:
As Middlebury moves forward to become the global liberal arts college for the 21st century, one way to communicate the idea is by how we represent ourselves graphically.
There is a need to present a coherent look that connects the College, the Bread Loaf programs, the Language Schools, our Schools Abroad, and our affiliate, the Monterey Institute of International Studies.
The overall identity system to help achieve this goal will be based on a mark with the word Middlebury, either used alone, or combined with the official academic seal of the College.
The seal, slightly revised and modernized, as seen at right, features the Latin phrase “SCIENTIA ET VIRTUS” or “KNOWLEDGE AND VIRTUE.” It should be used for formal academic and presidential communications. The simple wordmark—Middlebury—is recommended for all other uses. As planned, the panther will continue to be the logo for our athletic teams.
The new “double leaf” mark, below, designed specifically for the “Middlebury Initiative: Liberal Arts. Global Action.” will be used for materials related to our five-year fund-raising effort.

The success of any graphic identity program depends on the cooperation of all members of the community. If you have any questions about the program, please call the communications office at 802.443.5517.
I want to thank all of you who took the time to share the many thoughtful comments we received and helped us reach this decision.
Sincerely,
Mike McKenna
Vice President of Communications
