The real test of any citizenship program is what participants do in their lifetime office of citizen.
-Naylor 1990

Across the nation, there is a revitalized interest in the role higher education plays in promoting and modeling civic engagement. Students' exploration of civic participation can lay a foundation for lifetime involvement.

Campus Compact, a national organization helping higher education meet their civic missions writes, "At its most basic core, civic engagement is defined as the interaction of citizens with their society and their government (Patrick, 1998). For the purposes of this project civic engagement was broadly defined as, "those activities which reinvigorate the public purposes and civic mission of higher education." Civic engagement activities within higher education include objectives such as developing civic skills, inspiring engaged citizenship, promoting a civil society, and building the commonwealth."
