1. Minutes from March 21, 2001 were approved.

2. State of Environment Report:
A. Progress Made:
The data on college investments will soon be added to the Ocelot folder. Most of the information on transportation and new building/construction is in the folder, and the greenhouse gas emissions inventory is added. Amy will add any information she has to the folders.
B. Missing Data :
What about information on energy & water, awareness, recycling/composting?

3. Council Projects :
A. Earth Week:
Speaker: David Orr is not available to speak at Middlebury College.
Global Warming Panel: A free lunch will be available at the event. The panel is scheduled for April 18, 12:15 - 1:30pm, in McCullough Social Space. Speakers include Rich Wolfson and Paul Bortz of Spirit and Nature. There will be one or two other panelists. Members of the Environmental Council will help advertise a day or two before the event.
Trail Volunteer Day: Volunteers will work on the Class of '97 Trail under the direction of John Derick or someone else. The Volunteer Day is scheduled for April 21, 1-5 PM. Volunteers should meet in the Golf Course Parking lot, and they will get a free BBQ dinner. Tim will contact local groups.
      Other Non-Council Events:
These events will be attached in another email.
    1. Advertising:
Amy will advertise in Middpoints, Weekly Calendar, Table Tents, Enviroaffairs, ES and EC webpages, Burlington Free Press, at the Colloquium, and some large posters. Targeted advertising needs to be done for the panel and volunteer day.
    B. Greenhouse Gas Inventory:
The Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory for 1999 is just about complete. The results show commuters to be the largest contributor to global warming. Second to commuters is the university vehicle fleet. Midd's contribution from solid waste, heating, and electricity is smaller. Thanks to Mike Snow and Jess Widay for inputing the data into the calculator. Now the Council needs to figure emissions from an earlier year, perhaps 1995. Council members suggested a form for parking registration to include number of days in transit, and to look for the "low hanging fruit" in the inventory.
    C. Environmental Grants :
Amy forwarded the Environmental Grant Mid-year Reports to Council members. A Council member suggested for next year that we ask for particular projects through the RFP.
    D. Environmental Peak:
The list of suggestions for the Environmental Peak is complete, and Nan will put the list into the Peak Task Force Report for the Provost and President. Any Council members with further suggestions should email them to Nan.

4. Other Business:
A. Recent press: Middlebury College was mentioned as one of the "greenest" schools in a recent article in the Chronicle of Higher Education. Lara Dumond'00 was featured in the National Wildlife Federation's magazine as a "Conservation Hero" for her work on developing a restoration plan for the Bi Hall wetland, a project funded through an Environmental Grant and the NWF.
B. Council meetings : There are two more Council meetings left this semester. One on April 18 and one on May 2. At the May 2nd meeting, Environmental Grant recipients will give their reports. The Council's dinner is scheduled for May 9 at the Weybury Inn

Minutes respectfully submitted by Amy Seif on April 9, 2001.
