Middlebury College is taking responsibility and leadership for its contribution to climate change, reducing carbon emissions on campus with a target of carbon neutrality by 2016. Our reduction and offsetting initiatives include the installation of a new biomass gasification system at the college's heating plant, use of biofuels, energy audits and conservation, and purchase of offsets for the emissions produced by the Middlebury College Snowbowl.

Biomass Gasification

The completion of the biomass gasification facility marks a significant milestone toward our goal of carbon neutrality. Students, staff, and faculty from many different departments across campus were involved at every stage of this project. Middlebury’s new biomass gasification plant connects climate, energy, and community for a more sustainable energy future.

Power Shift 2009

Middlebury students joined thousands of young climate activists in Washington D.C. in February for Power Shift. With over 190 students attending, Middlebury had one of the largest groups of students from any school in the nation.
